Tea Parties: Misunderstood and Vastly Underrated

Elected officials of every political stripe ought to be shaking down to their Gucci loafers and pumps. History is forming and firming up harder than the proverbial brick wall right outside their congressional glass house. Yet they seem utterly oblivious.


Since last April, I've written a few columns on the Tea Parties, but I had never actually attended one in person. I harbored a few misconceptions, formed at a distance through the media's drive-by lens. Being a woman who tends to cower in crowds and who loves the security and solitude of my little office-cloister, I had been content to write based on the observations of others. But an Alabama homemaker-turned-activist, Suzanne Green of Birmingham, pulled me into the bosom of the Tea Party movement along with the Rainy Day Patriots.


And, honey, I'm here to tell you, it's a fiery hot bosom indeed.

What is Your Freedom Index?

Is there a direct relationship between the total number of people per representative and freedom? Consider the tale of two states: California and New Hampshire. As explained later in this article, various freedom rankings give California a very low score with respect to the freedoms enjoyed by its citizens; in contrast, “Live Free or Die” New Hampshire scores high in the freedom indices. As of the 2000 Census, California has a total population of approximately 34 million. And New Hampshire’s total population is approximately 1.2 million (about the same as the city of San Diego). Now we get to the interesting part. California’s huge population is represented by 80 legislators in the lower house of their state legislature. Given that fact, how many legislators would you expect to find in the lower house of tiny New Hampshire’s state legislature? 30? 60? 120? (Continue reading...)

Christmas With a Capital "C"

The holidays (at least four of them -- Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year's Day) are rapidly approaching. To save energy, we sometimes say "Happy Holidays", but more frequently, it's to avoid "offending" someone, or even more sinister, to marginalize religion. Now, I'm not Jewish, but if someone wishes me happy Hanukkah, I'll say "thanks!". Why not? I wouldn't mind being happy on those days.



You can say "Happy Holidays" if you want, but if a particular holiday is fast approaching, why not be specific?

'Pelosi's Victory for Women', by Camille Paglia or 'Pelosi's Road to Progressive Defeat'?..

Although I don't agree with everything Ms Paglia writes, I love to credit her when I do. Even Camille understands that the over reaching, financial boondoggle called 'Affordable Health Care for All Americans', is an egalitarian, usurpation of the peoples rights. Even Camille notes that Congress (aka. the D.C. Beltway population) have exempted themselves, once again, from their legislative march to Progressive-Socialism. It's a fun read from that perspective and Ms. Paglia is well known for never pulling any punches. Whether you agree or disagree with her perspectives, they are always well written and sprinkled with humor.

Sure, her healthcare bill is a mess, but her gritty maneuvering shows her mettle.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi scored a giant gain for feminism last weekend. In shoving her controversy-plagued healthcare reform bill to victory by a paper-thin margin, she conclusively demonstrated that a woman can be just as gritty, ruthless and arm-twisting in pursuing her agenda as anyone in the long line of fabled male speakers before her. Even a basic feminist shibboleth like abortion rights became just another card for Pelosi to deal and swap.

It was a stunningly impressive recovery for someone who seemed to be coming apart at the seams last summer, when a sputtering, rattled Pelosi struggled to deal with the nationwide insurgency of town hall protesters -- reputable, concerned citizens whom she outrageously tried to tar as Nazis. Whether or not her bill survives in the Senate is immaterial: Pelosi's hard-won, trench-warfare win sets a new standard for U.S. women politicians and is certainly well beyond anything the posturing but ineffectual Hillary Clinton has ever achieved.

As for the actual content of the House healthcare bill, horrors! Where to begin?

Help Us Honor a Fallen Hero, Thursday - November 12th

The body of Spc. Aaron Aamot, 22, killed during active duty in Afghanistan will be flown home this Thursday, November 12th.

We would like to show Aaron and his family our heartfelt appreciation for his heroism.

The plane is scheduled to arrive at Bellingham International airport at 3:00p.m. After a color guard ceremony (approximately 10 minutes) the hearse will be accompanied by a motorcade and proceed to Ferndale. The procession will take I-5 North to Exit 262 (Main Street) and then follow Main Street to Moles Funeral Home located at 2039 Main Street.

We want as many members of our community as we can, to line the route along Main Street. Please bring American Flags and any signs of thanks to honor our hero.

The motorcade is expected to arrive in Ferndale no later than 3:15 p.m.
